ORSO hosts spring concert Sunday

The Oconee Regional Symphony Orchestra (ORSO) will present its spring concert featuring the musical talents of local community members.

This year’s concert, titled “Drum Roll, Please,”  is slated for 2 p.m. Sunday in Georgia College’s Russell Auditorium.

The performance will feature musical selections, including Jean Sibelius’ “Finlandia,” Joseph Haydn’s “Symphony No. 103” and Carl Maria von Weber’s “Clarinet Concerto,” featuring guest clarinetist Monty Cole.

Cole is the director of jazz studies at Mercer University where he teaches clarinet and saxophone. The California native appears throughout the country as a clinician and performing artist in both classical and jazz areas.

A clarinet artist, Cole has worked with numerous orchestras including the Richmond Symphony in Indiana, the Lexington Philharmonic, the St. Martin Chamber Orchestra in Cincinnati, the Humboldt Symphony, the Minot Symphony, the Macon Symphony and the Ocmulgee Symphony.

He has performed on the Oprah Winfrey Show with Josh Groban and in concert with Barry Manilow, Kristin Chenoweth and Sarah McLachlan.

Representatives of the Milledgeville-Baldwin County Chamber of Commerce will convene to celebrate with a ribbon cutting ceremony at 1:30 p.m. prior to the concert.

Russell Auditorium is located on North Clarke Street on the Georgia College campus. Free parking is available around the auditorium. The event is free and open to the public though donations are accepted.

“We’re completely dependent on donations for our funding since we are a non-profit organization,” said Meredith Taylor, ORSO’s principal clarinetist and the ORSO board’s vice president. “All of the funds we raise at the door and donations we receive are used to promote the orchestra, purchase music for the orchestra and to have other people come play as featured soloists for concerts.”

ORSO is as a non-profit community orchestra that made its debut in fall 2011. The orchestra, now in its third year of performing, is the only community orchestra in the middle Georgia region, including strings, brass, winds and percussion. It is comprised of musicians from the community and surrounding areas, including Georgia College, Georgia Military College and Baldwin High School. Music Director David Johnson conducts the orchestra.

ORSO presents two annual concerts, one in the winter and one in the spring. The ensemble presents performance opportunities for local musicians and offers a wide variety of orchestra literature. The orchestra conducts open auditions in August and January. Individuals must be at least 16 and play an instrument to participate.
