Andrews St. collision leaves seven injured

MILLEDGEVILLE — Seven people were injured Thursday when a Honda Civic traveling north on South Wayne Street collided with a Chevrolet Blazer driving east on Andrews Street.

The accident happened shortly after 3 p.m.

Based on the motor vehicle accident report, the Civic approached the Andrews Street intersection red light when the driver’s brakes reportedly failed, causing the driver to crash into the right rear of the Blazer. The 24-year-old female Civic driver stated she saw the red light and when she attempted to stop, the brakes didn’t work, according to the accident report.

According to her statements last week, the brakes had been a problem and a relative recently redid them.

The collision caused the Blazer to lose its driver’s side tire, spin around and roll nearly 100 feet east of Wayne Street. The Chevy’s front seat passenger was entrapped and removed from the wreckage by bystanders.

Only one of the Blazer’s four child passengers, ages 1 to 8 years old, was restrained, according to the report. Based on the front windshield damage, the reporting police officer, Sgt. Thomas Smith, stated it was highly unlikely the 34-year-old front seat passenger wore her seatbelt either.

The Blazer’s four child passengers were transported to Oconee Regional Medical Center, where one received treatment for a head injury. The other three received care for cuts and bruises, according to the Milledgeville Police Department accident report.

The 32-year-old SUV driver suffered leg injuries, while the passenger was transported to the Medical Center of Central Georgia for a head injury.

The Civic’s driver did not receive medical treatment at the scene, but later visited ORMC.
