Milledgeville Youth Program offers free tutoring

MILLEDGEVILLE — When Julian and Valerie Reddick began helping local kids in their home with schoolwork, they immediately saw a need for a tutoring program in the area.

Together they created the Milledgeville Youth Program, a free tutoring program held at Central Georgia Technical College for students in third through 12th grade.

Tutoring sessions take place in classrooms at CGTC in the afternoons from 3:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Students participate in the program four days a week for five weeks and it didn't cost their parents one dime.

"We had a lot of kids coming by our house for help with homework and we heard from parents that the main thing that's keeping them from getting a tutor is the simple fact they couldn't afford one," said Reddick.

The first tutoring session began April 1. Now that the completion of the five-week tutoring session has come, Reddick and the tutors are going over progress reports hoping to see improvement in grades.

"All the progress reports we've seen so far have shown higher grades in the subjects the child was struggling with," he said.

Besides academic tutoring, students are also mentored and receive an education in life choices.

"We try to teach them how to make smart decisions and know the difference between doing right and doing wrong," Reddick said.

Reddick also helps students learn how to apply and interview for jobs within the community.

"They need to know how to walk into an interview and how to carry themselves like ladies and gentleman," he said. "It's important that they make the right first impression when they apply and interview for a job."

Besides Reddick and his wife, the program also receives tutoring support from resident Reginald Burton and CGTC campus director Brione Burrows. Area students also help out in the tutoring effort. Georgia College student Samantha Carlile offers her tutoring services in the afternoons as well as eighth grade students, Kimaria Bassar and Nykria Russ.

Although the current tutoring session has come to a close, parents interested in participating on the next session are encouraged to sign their kids up over the summer.

Volunteers and donations are always welcome. For more information or to sign up call Julian Reddick at 706-444-3525 or Brione Burrows at 478-757-6636.
