Organizations want students to Skip the Curb

MILLEDGEVILLE — A local collaboration implores Georgia College students and the general community to redirect furniture or household item dumping to a better place.

This Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. the inaugural Skip the Curb collection will be set up between Georgia College’s main campus and West Campus residence halls.

The project, created by Keep Milledgeville-Baldwin Beautiful, Milledgeville-Baldwin County Habitat for Humanity and Georgia College, is an effort to keep perfectly useable items out of landfills and allow someone in need the opportunity to afford the household items necessary to make a home.

There will be six stations set up and manned by volunteers sorting items to go to the Habitat ReStore or the No Sale Yard Sale at First United Methodist Church.

KMBB Executive Director Andrew Davis said all parties came together for Skip the Curb.

“We determined it was very possible and beneficial to all of the groups involved,” Davis said. “We saw an opportunity to prevent waste of goods that could be used by families in need.”

Volunteers at each station will have tax receipts ready for anyone donating and a list of acceptable items.

Trucks will make rounds picking up any extra items for Habitat.

The local ReStore could use the donated furniture, appliances and other like-new housewares.

Davis hopes the hundreds of students heading home for the summer decide donation over the trash route.

“Very often those things are in fine condition. They just don’t have the room,” he said

Off campus residents can drop off donations to any of the Georgia College campus stations Friday or call the Habitat ReStore at 478-453-9617 to set up a pickup time. Items may also be dropped directly at the store.

The Habitat ReStore sells new and gently used furniture, functioning household appliances, clean furnishings and building material surplus. The store doesn’t carry clothing, “knick-knacks,” electronic items, computers and computer peripherals (keyboards, printers, copy machines, etc).

All items are donated for sale, and the proceeds support Habitat’s mission of eliminating substandard housing in Milledgeville-Baldwin County.

Items may be donated Thursday through Saturday from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m., and tax receipts are available to all donors. The ReStore is located at 730 N. Wayne St.
