Milledgeville Idol 2013 prepares for sixth year

MILLEDGEVILLE — Milledgeville's annual Milledgeville Idol singing competition has a much different feel to it this year than in the past.

Since the competition began in 2008, Georgia College has taken the traditional approach by requiring contestants to audition in person.

This year, contestants will be able to submit video auditions through Georgia College’s Milledgeville Idol website —

When submitting an online audition, contestants must sing a song a cappella (with no music), lasting no more than three minutes.

Auditions are open to all legal residents of Georgia 18 and older. Proof of identification will be required.

Contestants are not allowed to be associated with any type of professional singing or performing. If a contestant is chosen, they must prove before August 1 that they do not have a talent representative, a music-recording contract, an acting or modeling contract or a merchandising agreement.

Online audition submission will close Thursday and the contestants will be chosen after all auditions are seen.

The competition will take place on Friday, August 23 and Saturday, August 24, at 7 p.m. in the Russell Auditorium at Georgia College.

On Friday night, all contestants will sing and allow the audience to vote. This will narrow the contest down to the final five contestants.

On Saturday night, the remaining five contestants will sing one more song and the audience will vote to determine the winner.

This year's competition will be Motown-themed, allowing contestants to choose songs from famous artists such as Marvin Gaye and Stevie Wonder.

“The prize for the winner is $1,000,” said Program Coordinator Stephanie Westmoreland. “There are second and third place monetary prizes, as well.”

Advance tickets for the event go on sale Monday, July 29. These will be available at the Milledgeville Idol website, by calling the Department of Education at (478)-445-5277, or at 100 Chappell Hall downtown.
