More showers, flood watch for area today

MILLEDGEVILLE — The rains moved in Wednesday night over Central Georgia and stayed for a good portion of the day Thursday. More showers are expected today and on through the weekend. Chance of rain for Friday is 60 percent.

The National Weather Service issued a flash flood warning through Thursday afternoon for areas of Central Georgia including Baldwin and surrounding counties.

By Thursday evening that warning changed to a flash flood watch and was extended through Saturday. The watch includes Baldwin, Wilkinson, Putnam and Hancock counties.

According to the weather service, three to five inches of rain had already fallen in the area by 8 a.m. Thursday and another two to three inches were expected for the day.

With a tropical storm building off the coast of Florida, more rains are expected for the weekend.

Tropical Storm Erin is moving away from the Cape Verde Islands in the eastern Atlantic, and it's expected to strengthen over the next two days.

The National Hurricane Center in Miami said Thursday at press time that the storm's maximum sustained winds are near 40 mph (65 kph).

The storm is centered about 115 miles (185 kilometers) west-southwest of Brava and is moving west-northwest at 15 mph (24 kph). Forecasters expect the storm to continue in that general direction over the next couple of days.

As for Baldwin and the rest of Central Georgia, the flash flood watch remains at least through Saturday.

A flash flood watch means that conditions may develop that lead to flash flooding, and motorists are urged to proceed with caution. A stationary front is expected to bring heavy rain, strong thunderstorms and lightening. Excessive runoff from the heavy rains could cause flooding in small creeks and streams as well as highways and underpasses.
