Downtown pavilion awaits final go-ahead

MILLEDGEVILLE — A pavilion proposed by Milledgeville Main Street and the Downtown Development Authority to serve as the new home for the Milledgeville Marketplace Farmer’s Market and a space for community gatherings is less than a few weeks from start-up construction.

City Council approved a contract with Dyer Construction Inc. for the work on the pavilion Tuesday.

Main Street and DDA director Carlee Schulte said technically the project is still on hold pending final paperwork, but getting the city locked in was important. A $42,000 Rural Business Enterprise Grant through the United States Department of Agriculture will help defray construction costs.

“We are still waiting on USDA approval to start construction. We wanted to get the city on board, so that when USDA says go we can actually go,” Schulte said.

The grant was awarded for pavilion construction as a means for local farmers to sell more products thereby boosting the economy.

A wooden 40 x 60 foot structure, handicap accessible bathroom, lighting, power outlets and fans are included in the plans. Schulte said the main parking will still be in the lower area, because the original front parking addition didn’t make the final cut.

“It’s going to be set up strictly as a pavilion for the market,” she said. “As we move forward throughout the year, I plan on using it for other activities and events as well. I hope to draw it into the downtown area also.”

Schulte doesn’t expect a lengthy wait from the grantor’s side.

“I’m hoping to get started in the next two to three weeks. The USDA has the bid packaging, so they should be wrapping up their decision. From there, we will be a go. If it’s more than three weeks, I’ll be surprised,” Schulte said.

As downtown Milledgeville continues cleaning aesthetics through Streetscape and other improvements, the market pavilion looks like another meaningful step.

“This is just going to add another architectural detail to the downtown area that we don’t currently have. We don’t have a nice pavilion anywhere. It should add to the aesthetics,” Schulte said.
