GC faculty members chosen for Governor’s Teaching Fellows program

MILLEDGEVILLE — It’s a program aimed at providing Georgia's higher education faculty with the opportunity to develop their teaching skills, and two Georgia College faculty members were chosen to participate.

Dr. Marcela Chiorescu and Dr. Jerry Herbel will participate in the Governor’s Teaching Fellows program this year.

Chiorescu joined the 2013 Summer Symposium. She spent two weeks during the month of May in Athens, Ga., where she learned new ideas and created relationships with professors from around the state for future collaborations.

“The program is definitely one of the highlights of my career as a teacher,” said Chiorescu, assistant professor of mathematics. “It provided an opportunity for faculty and staff in higher education to get together in an interdisciplinary environment and share the passion for teaching and learning while focusing on cutting edge methods and strategies.”

The Governor's Teaching Fellows Program’s goal is to enhance instruction in both public and private sectors of higher education.

“I’m confident that every time I prepare my classes I’ll reach to the bag of novel teaching tools I gained and find a new idea, technique or method to help me create an engaging learning environment for my students,” said Chiorescu.

Political science professor Dr. Jerry Herbel will participate in the academic year program which begins in September.

“This is a very exciting opportunity for me,” said Herbel. “I hope to learn better ways of integrating technology into my teaching and generally update my courses to help students prepare for graduate school or work.”

Since the beginning of the program, fellows have represented more than 75 different disciplines, professions and teaching areas and researched dozens of unique components of education.

“Sometimes we teachers become stale and lose sight of our goals and connection with students,” said Herbel. “This program brings together faculty members from across the state to learn from and with each other, all with the goal of becoming better teachers.”
