Campus Club youth show off talents in Las Vegas

MILLEDGEVILLE — Recent Baldwin High School graduate Chris Jackson is eager to show off his passion for dance in Las Vegas this weekend on an all-expense paid opportunity.

Jackson is part of the hip hop dance group Silence, the winning contestants in Campus Club Milledgeville’s black history talent show held in February, along with singer Ania Davis.

“We’re going to Las Vegas to try to get noticed, get out more and become successful with dancing. We will perform at a health convention while we’re there,” Jackson said. “I have had a strong passion for dancing since I was about 14 years old and I have grown to love it; now I know dancing is my life. We wouldn’t have been able to do any of this without Campus Club.”

Nearly 100 students ages 10 and older took part in the talent show audition process as small groups or individual acts in early January. The top 10 performers competed for the Las Vegas trip. Members of Silence include Jackson, Tommell Johnson, Voisel Renfroe and Chris Guy.

“This grand prize trip is for two winners because they were both equally talented [so] we decided to take both from the contest. Ania is a phenomenal singer and these guys are phenomenal dancers,” said Gregory Barnes, CCM executive director. “The kids are very excited. They’re looking forward to experiencing Las Vegas, seeing the Jabbawockeez show and other shows they will choose when we get there. We want to show them that their gifts can take them far because if you work hard at what you do well, you can get to the top. They realize their dancing and singing got them to Las Vegas; it’s a real confidence booster.”

CCM, a non-profit organization, is a year-round arts and enrichment program designed to serve the millennial generation ages 7 to 26. CCM offers courses in Baldwin, Jones, Hancock, Putnam, Washington and Wilkinson counties. A variety of music, dance, theater, writing, art and language courses are offered, focusing on the creativity in the youngsters. All the services are for free to those who need it most.
