Lions Club hopes to feed 800 with spaghetti plates

MILLEDGEVILLE —

The Milledgeville Lions Club is hoping to feed more than 800 people during its annual spaghetti dinner fundraiser next week.

“This is our biggest fundraiser for the past several years,” said Paul May, president of the local club. “Please come join us for good food, good music and fellowship.”

Lions will welcome spaghetti-lovers to Crockett’s Cafeteria from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 27. Tickets can be purchased from a Lion, or at the door for $7, which includes all-you-can-eat spaghetti, coleslaw, bread, cookies and drinks. Carry-out orders will also be available.

“We will also have a meatless sauce available for vegetarians,” May said. “The gospel music group ‘The Generals’ have volunteered and played for the last few years and they will provide entertainment again this year.”

Proceeds from the fundraiser will support local Lions projects, Georgia Lions Camp for the Blind, Georgia Lions Lighthouse Foundation and Leader Dogs for the Blind.

“Funds raised are used to help the sight and hearing impaired in our community and state with eye screenings, glasses, surgeries, hearing aids and sending kids to the Georgia Lions Camp for the Blind in Waycross. Last year we had 114 campers,” May said. “Since the club formed, we’ve provided three seeing-eye dogs to people in Milledgeville.”

In 1977, the local organization began selling plates of homemade spaghetti which were prepared at the homes of club members.

“I’ve been a chairman for close to 20 years, and when I took over, we were feeding 200 to 250 people. The most we’ve ever fed was right at 1,000 people back in early 2000,” May said. “In the last two to three years, we’ve been feeding about 800 people. Times are hard and last year’s ticket sales were down, but we hope to feed at least 800 to 900 people this year.”
