Downtown merchants are ready to let visitors fall in love as shoppers take advantage of specials and discounts this First Friday.
“The downtown businesses have gotten together to offer some great downtown deals,” said Carlee Schulte, director of Milledgeville Main Street. “Although the winter months are slower, we have been busy planning and getting geared back up for some great events and activities for the coming year.”
Various downtown deals will be available from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, including French toast at Local Yolkal, 40 percent off boots at French Vill’Edge, 15 percent off a gift certificate from Hairbar and a chance to win a Valentine’s Day basket at the Whimsy Willow.
The evening can be spent with a special someone at The Velvet Elvis for a $20 steak night, or try out one of multiple dinner and drink specials at Buffington’s. Asian Bistro will also have half-priced bottles of wine available.
As February is distinguished as the American Heart Association’s 10th annual Go Red For Women movement, First Friday’s featured nonprofit organization — the Milledgeville Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority — is participating in the America Goes Red Challenge as they spotlight heart disease in women. All First Friday attendees are encouraged to wear red to help bring awareness to heart disease.
“Heart disease continues to be the number one killer of women, taking more lives than all kinds of cancer combined,” Schulte said. “The [sorority] is a chapter of dedicated members committed to making a big difference by providing relevant and exemplary public service in our community.”
The First Friday initiative began February 2011 as a way to provide the community a day full of socializing, shopping, entertainment and an opportunity to appreciate local creative talent. Each month since, the First Friday project has continued to draw attention to the city’s historic downtown district by recognizing local artists’ talent through different themes.
“Main Street wishes to thank all of the supporters of First Friday throughout the past three years. The volunteer committee that works tirelessly to put on these great events deserves a big hand as well,” Schulte said. “This event has taken off and we are thrilled with the community engagement and excitement it has created.”
