PHOTOS: GMC facility construction aims for May completion

MILLEDGEVILLE — The recent winter storm warnings and inclement weather has not kept Skanska Construction Group from stopping work on the $17 million Health and Wellness Center at Georgia Military College.

"The weather has been a challenge, but they are getting it done," GMC Engineering Services Vice President Jeff Gray said Thursday. "Most of the glass is installed, sheetrock is going up and they are continuing the electrical work. The flooring should start in about a week to a week and a half; we’re waiting to get the court area in first."

Last week, cranes were used to install chillers on the roof, which will cool the building using cold water. The design for the facility’s sign is still being created.

An additional site superintendent and project engineer were brought in by Skanska to help finish the grand project on a timely schedule.

"Now we have three site superintendents and two project engineers," Gray said. "They have added value to the project for us. They’re doing a great job getting everything installed properly."

The new state-of-the-art facility will provide appropriate space to educate GMC preparatory and college students on health, nutrition and fitness once complete in early May.

The facility adds 55,000 square feet on three levels on the north side of the Cordell Events Center and is integrated into the existing building. It features two multi-purpose courts, an elevated walking and running track, classrooms, weight and cardio training spaces, athletic storage facilities, staff offices and locker rooms.
