Greenway market kicks off the new year

The Greenway Farmers Market is kicking off another year this weekend with winter produce, meats and breads.

“Markets in the winter time are lighter as far as what farmers are growing,” market volunteer Ginger Carter Miller said. “This is the time of year that seasonal foods are leaning more toward dark, leafy greens and root vegetables.”

The market at Oconee River Greenway will be held from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday rain or shine.

Farmers from the middle Georgia area will be on site offering sustainably-grown seasonal vegetables, meats and dairy products, including kale, carrots, radishes, broccoli, onions, turnip roots, potatoes, eggs, pork, lamb, beef, chicken, goat, jams, jellies, herbs and artisan breads.

“We will also have hot, locally roasted coffee from Blackbird Coffee available,” Miller said.

Vendors scheduled to attend Saturday’s market include Babe + Sage Farm, Elm Street Gardens, Evergreen East Farm, Forest Grove Farm, Fort Creek Farm, Rag & Frass Farm, Salamander Springs Farm and Sparkleberry Market Garden.

“When the weather is this cold, I admire farmers even more because they’re out there working to keep fresh produce coming to Milledgeville. When people shop at the market, they’re supporting local businesses and that helps Baldwin County in so many special ways,” Miller said. “So many of them are young families, and it’s just admirable for all the good things they do.”

The Greenway market is slated from 9 a.m. to noon the third Saturday of February and March. The market will continue on a weekly schedule starting Saturday, April 5.
