Holocaust survivor visits Georgia College

MILLEDGEVILLE —

More than six million Jews died during the Holocaust. Georgia College will take part in an international event to honor the victims by welcoming a Holocaust survivor to campus.

The theatre and music departments, along with the student organization Goodrich Hillel, present Holocaust Remembrance Day Friday, Jan. 24 in the Campus Black Box Theatre.

The event begins at 1 p.m. and was made possible through collaboration with the former education director of the Breman Museum in Atlanta.

“Holocaust Remembrance Day will include speaker Ela Weissberger, who is a survivor of the Terezin concentration camp,” said Dr. Karen Berman, chair of the theatre department. “Ela is the last living person who sang in the children's opera ‘Brundibar’ in the camp. She sang in all 55 performances as a child, playing the Cat, including the one filmed for the International Red Cross.”

Twenty Georgia College students and Dr. Wendy Mullen, professor of music, will sing two songs from the children's opera with Weissberger.

“The research for my dissertation focused on a composer from the Terezin concentration camp, so for me to actually meet and perform with a survivor is something I never thought I would be able to do,” said Mullen. “She is an amazing person. I know that everyone who attends the event will be impacted by her story of survival. She can teach us that we too can overcome anything.”

Also as part of this ceremony, the sponsoring groups will participate in the Am Yisrael Chai (Survival of the Spirit) Daffodil Project, a nonprofit Holocaust education and awareness organization that brings a living Holocaust Memorial to campuses and institutions. The Daffodil Project aspires to plant 1.5 million daffodils to remember the children who died during the Holocaust.

The theatre department, music department and Goodrich Hillel will hold a ceremonial planting of 360 daffodil bulbs on campus the same day.

Several Georgia College students and faculty members will also participate in the Holocaust Remembrance Day ceremony in Atlanta Sunday, Jan. 26. The group of singers will again perform with Weissberger.

All events are free and open to the public.
