Man allegedly let 12-year-old drive

MILLEDGEVILLE — Michael Alan McCant, 36, of Gordon was charged with first-degree homicide by vehicle, driving under the influence, failure to maintain lane and driving while license suspended or revoked relating to the Jan. 6 Gordon Highway collision that took the life of 64-year-old Janice Scruggs.

Even with these warrants taken out on June 19, McCant didn’t check himself into the Baldwin County Jail until a July 6 traffic violation placed him in custody.

McCant, who is wheelchair bound from the accident, allegedly let a 12-year-old girl drive him around the area.

Maj. Lynnette LaRocque with the Baldwin County Sheriff's Office (BCSO) said a call came in about a juvenile driving down the road.

The patrol deputy that initiated the vehicle stop realized McCant had open warrants and arrested him for permitting an unlicensed minor to drive.

McCant was bonded out shortly after and left, according to the BCSO.

His physical condition makes enacting house arrest provisions difficult, but LaRocque said there haven't been any calls on McCant since this incident.

At 7:08 a.m. Jan. 6, the Georgia State Patrol responded to the accident involving McCant and Scruggs occurring just north of J.F. Hall Road off state Route 243, also known as Gordon Highway.

According to the Georgia State Patrol crash report, there was a collision between McCant's 2007 BMW sedan traveling northbound and Scruggs' 2006 Crown Victoria heading south.

Scruggs, who was a Milledgeville resident, was pronounced dead on the scene. McCant was extracted from his BMW by emergency responders and rushed to medical attention.

He was in critical condition at The Medical Center of Central Georgia for some time after the incident.

The GSP Troop E Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team (SCRT) handled the crash investigation and delivered the case findings to the District Attorney on June 18.

The toxicology report from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation Division of Forensic Sciences showed McCant tested positive for drugs at the time of the crash. Test results showed methamphetamine and other controlled substance.
