UPDATE: Detached cargo causes Monday road fatality

MILLEDGEVILLE — An emergency call came in at 11:10 a.m. Monday to the Baldwin County Sheriff's Office. A traffic accident on Ga. Highway 22 near its intersection with Stembridge Road ended fatally for one man.

The Georgia State Patrol said a tractor-trailer truck headed westbound lost its haul. The trailer full of timber detached from the big rig and impacted a Chevrolet truck heading eastbound.

The deceased driver was a 24-year-old from Fort Valley. Baldwin County Coroner John Gonzalez said Clayton Goolsby, 24, died from blunt force trauma to the head. An autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday.

The tractor-trailer operator, Eatonton resident Albert Yarbrough, was uninjured, according to GSP Post 33.

GSP investigators, BCSO officers, Baldwin County Fire Department and Georgia Department of Transportation officials were on the scene Monday. The roadway was closed to through traffic for several hours, as personnel shifted through the crash debris.

The Georgia State Patrol Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team (SCRT) took over the investigation.

TFC Michael Screws with GSP Post 33 said it appeared the trailer broke off in the roadway's curve.

Screws said the exact cause of the accident will be based on the SCRT's findings.

“We know what holds the trailer to the cab broke, and it obviously cut loose, twisted and turned over on the truck. We know that happened,” Screws said. “What caused that weight shift we don't know.”
