BOE continues process of superintendent search

MILLEDGEVILLE — The Baldwin County Board of Education is taking steps to move to a second round of interviews to fill the soon-to-be vacant superintendent's post.

In November the school board accepted Superintendent Geneva Braziel's resignation, effective June 30. She served two terms as superintendent for the district.

The board anticipates having a new superintendent in place before the start of the 2014-2015 school year in August.

According to school board chairman John Jackson, District 4, the board received more than 30 applicants for the job.

Applicants are required to hold or are eligible for a Georgia Leadership Certificate at L-6 level or higher, and to have had successful experience as a classroom educator. Georgia law requires that the candidate not have an immediate family member serving on the Baldwin County Board of Education or be employed as an administrator in the school district after July 1, 2009. Preferred qualifications should carry successful educational experience in the southeastern region of the United States as a superintendent or principal, effective oral communication and public speaking skills, participation in community and professional organizations, and they should possess an ability to utilize technology at every level.

The first round of interviews took place May 3 at the Milledgeville-Baldwin County Chamber of Commerce office. Four candidates were chosen out of the 30 applicants as possible hires for the position.

"The interviews went very well. We had very strong applicants to interview for the position, and I'm looking forward to the second round," Jackson said.

The interviews ranged between 45 minutes to an hour for each candidate, he added.

"This is a very detailed process that we don't want to rush. Our selection will not only impact Baldwin County Schools but the community as well."

During the first full week of May, school board members met to discuss details derived from the first round of interviews conducted with the candidates. They also discussed which candidates would be invited for a second interview session.

The school board is slated to begin the second round of interviews at 5:30 p.m. at the Chamber office on Monday. Interviews will continue Tuesday and Wednesday.

After the second round of interviews, the board will meet once again to determine which candidates are finalists for the position.

"Our main goal at this point is to come together as a board to come to a consensus of which candidates would best fit the position," Jackson said. "We fully understand the importance of the selection for a new superintendent and we want to make sure we hire the best superintendent for Baldwin County Schools."

Once candidates go through the entire interview process, the Georgia School Boards Association (GSBA) recommends the school board to select three candidates as finalists to be publicly announced.
