Oak Hill rock ’n’ rolls with black history

MILLEDGEVILLE — Oak Hill Middle School students are in the midst of final rehearsals as they prepare to transform into African-Americans of the rock ‘n’ roll era during the upcoming black history program titled “Black History Rocks.”

“We will highlight influential African-American icons from the 50s era who had a great influence on rock ‘n’ roll,” Black History Program Coordinator Claritha Wilson said. “The Oak Hill cast is about 65 students, but in all we have over 100 students. We have students from respective counties that will also come and perform.”

The show is scheduled at 10:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Saturday in the school’s auditorium. Tickets are on sale for $5 at the school’s front office.

“Students have worked extremely hard this year,” Wilson said. “Every year they not only give me an excellent performance on stage, but also in the classroom. I expect greatness from them at all times.”

In the signature segment of the show, “Who Am I,” students will showcase inspiring African-American idols, including Dr. Ben Carson, Michelle Obama, Tiger Woods, Nikki Giovanni, Mary Church Terrell and Mary McLeod Bethune.

“We will also have elementary students presenting Thurgood Marshall, Bessie Smith and Maya Angelou,” Wilson said. “We will also have  inspirational dances, poetry and readings about Milledgeville’s black history and around the world. We will honor individuals like Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Tina Turner and Jimi Hendrix. The Oak Hill band will perform a piece from Jimi Hendrix or Stevie Wonder.”

As the sponsor of the yearly program, PTO received a sneak peak of the program during PTO night Tuesday.

“I want to give special thanks to the parents of the cast, families, friends, PTO and the community,” Wilson said. “They come out in record numbers and we appreciate everyone who made this show possible.”
