Broun to run for U.S. Senate

MILLEDGEVILLE — Republican Rep. Paul Broun announced his plans Wednesday to run for U.S. Senate in 2014.

The Congressman seeks to ascend to the seat currently held by Republican Sen. Saxby Chambliss, who announced last month that he will not seek a third term.

At a late-afternoon rally held in Atlanta, Broun told supporters of his intentions to run. In a statement released to media, Broun said he seeks office in the senior Congressional chamber to continue his fight for fiscal conservatism in Washington.

“I went to Congress to stand against out-of-control spending in Washington D.C.,” he said. “Though it has often been a lonely fight, it is a necessary one. We must have someone to lead the fight to stop this madness, and restore fiscal restraint to our nation’s capital. Georgia needs a Senator who will take a stand to stop the irresponsible spending. I’ll be that leader. When I was sworn into the Marine Corps, and then again into the House of Representatives, I swore to defend the Constitution against all enemies both foreign and domestic. Out-of-control spending has become our nation’s enemy.”

Broun's candidacy promises that the Republican primary will highlight the party's most conservative branch. Besides his emphasis on small government, Broun is an outspoken social conservative. A physician, he garnered national attention for calling evolution "lies from the pit of Hell."

Other Republicans mentioned as potential primary opponents for Broun’s Senate run are Reps. Paul Gingrey of Marietta, Jack Kingston of Savannah and Tom Price of Roswell. On the democratic side, Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed has said he will not seek the post. District 12 Congressman John Barrow, whose district used to include Baldwin County, has also had his name circulated as a potential candidate.
