MILLEDGEVILLE — Baldwin County Fire Rescue was recently awarded a 2013 Car Seat Mini-Grant to conduct car seat checks and provide education for financially eligible local families.

The grant was awarded through the Georgia Department of Public Health, Office of Injury Prevention. The Governor’s Office of Highway Safety and the Maternal and Child Health Program fund the grant each year.

According to a press release on the grant, since 2007 at least 229 Georgia children involved in vehicle crashes have been saved from serious injury or death by car seats, booster seats and education programs.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, car seats reduce fatal injuries by 71 percent among infants and by 54 percent among children ages 1 to 4 in passenger’s seats.

“It’s our responsibility to keep our children safe,” said Lt. Sheri Kneip of Baldwin County Fire Rescue via press release. “The car seat mini-grant is a great opportunity to help our community and help protect our kids from serious injuries or death in motor vehicle crashes.”
