Firehouse Subs to offer steamy subs, public safety support

MILLEDGEVILLE — Milledgeville native William McComb said he’s thrilled to cater to the cravings of area first responders, firefighters and hearty meat and cheese lovers with steaming hot subs at his new eatery, Firehouse Subs.

Located in a 1,900 square-foot portion of the former Blockbuster building with a capacity of seating 50, Firehouse Subs is expected to open in late March or early April.

“Right now we’re getting the plans drawn up by the architect," McComb said. "Construction should start in two to three weeks.”

The restaurant chain serves up its famous hot specialty subs, including the New York Steamer, Engineer, Firehouse Hero and Hook & Ladder, cold subs, salads and kid’s combos. Catering of sub, salad, cookie and brownie platters will also be available.

“Firehouse Subs specializes in hot steamed subs. The portions are hearty; we put more meat on sandwiches than other restaurants. We will offer all of the standard options, like the Hook & Ladder. That sub has ham and turkey with Monterey jack cheese and the steamer heats it all up to release the flavor of the meats and cheese. Then it’s topped with lettuce, tomato, onions, mayo and spicy mustard,” McComb said. “We will also have Coke Freestyle, which is a coke machine with a computer screen that allows you to mix up your drink; it can make over 140 flavors.”

Through the Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation, the nonprofit provides funding, equipment and educational opportunities for first responders and public safety organizations.

Founded in 1994 by two former firefighting brothers, Firehouse Subs currently has 581 restaurant locations with 62 located in Georgia.

Firehouse Subs in Milledgeville is slated to be open from 10:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and until 10 p.m. Friday through Saturday.

“It will be closer to the end of March before I’m looking to hire,” McComb said. “I’ll hire about 18 to 20 full-time and part-time people.”
