First Friday features chili face-off

The heat gets turned up in Milledgeville Main Street's First Friday's Chili in Milly from 6 to 8 p.m. Today’s event will feature a chili cook-off and a 911 chili eating contest featuring local police officers and firemen.

Participating downtown businesses will offer 4 ounce samplings of their favorite chili recipes. Tickets per sampling will be sold by the First Friday Committee for $1. There will be a table set up to purchase tickets on the corner of Hancock and Wayne streets next to Amici.

The battle between the Milledgeville Police Department and the Milledgeville Fire Department in the 911 Chili Eating Contest starts at 6:30 p.m. inside Digital Bridges.

Three local firemen will vie for the title against three police officers from MPD. The challenge is to eat as many bowls of chili as possible within 9 minutes and 11 seconds.

“We are excited about this competition and can't wait to see who comes out on top,” said Milledgeville Main Street Director Carlee Schulte.

Z-97 will be on hand to announce the winners of the two chili awards — Best Chili and People’s Choice. The overall Best Chili award will be determined by a panel of judges consisting of Milledgeville Mayor Richard Bentley, City Manager Barry Jarrett and Police Chief Dray Swicord, along with two certified chili cook-off judges, Randy and Deborah Gilman.

Also featured at this month’s installment of First Friday will be the Oconee Regional Medical Center Kid’s Corner and live music.

Proceeds from today’s event will go toward future First Friday efforts and to support downtown Milledgeville.

For more information, call Schulte at (478) 414-4014.
