Gas prices dropping as holiday season nears

MILLEDGEVILLE — Baldwin County residents are getting an early Christmas gift: lower gas prices.

Gas prices are dropping right before the busy holiday travel season that begins Saturday. Nationally, gas prices average $3.44. AAA Auto Club South reported Thursday that the average price per gallon in Georgia now averages $3.23, compared with $3.30 a week ago, $3.93 a month ago and $3.37 a year ago.

Locally, residents are eager to take advantage of these lowered gas prices. Rudy Floyd pulled up to the Flash Foods convenience store on Highway 49 West to fill up his Toyota Tacoma with Exxon gas, which was $3.17 a gallon.

"A buddy of mine told me it was around $3 this morning, and God knows I haven't seen it that low in a long while,” Floyd said as he filled his vehicle.

He said that usually he would only get enough gas to get him to and from work, but today he was going to fill it up completely.

"When it was $3.99 I got about three, maybe four gallons. Four dollars a gallon to fill up this Tacoma would have me broke every week,” Floyd said.

The last period when Milledgeville saw a significant change in gas prices was in 2011 during the grand opening of Milledgeville's Kroger and the unveiling of the newest gas pumps in town. This caused other gas stations along U.S. Highway 441 to compete with the low price. Kroger's fuel price, without any use of a Kroger Plus Card, was $2.95 for regular grade last October. Prices at other gas stations dropped from around $3.35 per gallon to $2.99 per gallon with the opening of the new Kroger station.

Prices continue to hover around the $3 mark locally. At press time Thursday, the Shell Station on Roberson Mill Road was $3.09 and BP was $3.05.
