MILLEDGEVILLE — Last year, more than 2,400 students participated in intramural sports like flag football, basketball, dodgeball and even inner tube water polo.
That popularity with students, the number of intramural sports available and the quality of team management and coaching helped rank Georgia College’s intramural program as one of the top in the nation, according to BestColleges.com.
“This is an amazing honor for the intramural program at Georgia College,” said Director of Recreational Sports Bert Rosenberger. “It means a lot that the program has been ranked nationally and shows the dedication of our staff, student workers and all the participants to establish a tradition of excellence.”
Intramural sports are open to all students of different athletic abilities and competitive levels.
“We offer 80 different leagues for 12 sports,” said Rosenberger. “Our goal is to always cater to the students' needs when it comes to the sports we offer and the times that we offer them.”
In the last several years, the program has increased the number of sports offered and student participation.
“In 2007, we had about 175 teams competing. Now we have about 700 teams total during our four segments each year,” said Rosenberger.
Georgia College was one of 50 programs ranked on the list of best colleges for intramural sports by the online resource.
