Baldwin Treatment Courts hold winter coat drive

MILLEDGEVILLE — The Baldwin County Adult Treatment Court Collaborative (ATCC) and the Family Dependency Treatment Court (FDTC) will hold a winter coat drive this month to help families in the programs to stay warm this winter. The courts are seeking gently used winter coats of all sizes for the drive, which takes place through Dec. 11.

“The gesture of giving a coat to our coat drive for families in our substance abuse and mental health courts will mean a warm piece of clothing for families who are battling a crippling disease,” said Superior Court Judge Hulane E. George, the presiding judge of the ATCC. “For those who give, it will mean a warm feeling in their hearts knowing that they have warmed not only a body, but a spirit of one who is trying hard to become a contributing member of our community.”

The courts work with defendants who are putting their lives together through recovery. However, often they have lost everything, including their winter clothes. The drive will help to fill the gap. The court is also accepting tax deductible monetary donations.

“The holiday season is particularly difficult for our participants struggling with addiction, many of whom have lost temporary custody of their children along with many of their material belongings,” said Juvenile Court Judge Philip B. Spivey, the presiding judge of the Baldwin County FDTC. “As we collect coats from our community for those parents in need, we are helping to save those families.”
