Infant dies in crash

MILLEDGEVILLE — A 13-month-old child died after two vehicles collided on North Jefferson Street Tuesday night.

Around 7 p.m., a northbound Toyota crossed over into southbound traffic hitting a Chevrolet Impala head-on just past East Walton Street, according to TFC Jim Lewis with the Georgia State Patrol.

The lone southbound driver and three related females in the Toyota were transported to an area hospital. The health status of the adult parties involved is unknown at this time, according to GSP.

Lewis said both drivers were trapped and required extraction from the front seats.

Based on current evidence, the infant was unrestrained in the back seat at the time the Toyota altered its course into oncoming traffic.

The baby succumbed to injuries suffered during the crash.

“It's really a sad situation,” Lewis said.

Due to the rainy conditions and injuries involved, a GSP Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team (SCRT) came out to the crash site Tuesday evening. The SCRT investigates fatal crashes and documents evidence for potential legal use.

Authorities closed down the roadway from Walton to Hall street for three hours, allowing the SCRT to analyze the scene.
