GCSU to host area educators workshop

A Georgia College & State University weekend workshop hopes to take a step toward increasing early childhood and middle grades students’ abilities, especially in math and science.

The workshop, entitled “Closing the Achievement Gaps: Research-based Practices in Diverse Classrooms in Middle Georgia” will be 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday in the Peabody Auditorium at GCSU. The workshop is for area educators and they are advised to reserve seats to the event.

The presenter for the event is Dr. Roland Tharp, director of the Center for Research on Equity and Diversity in Education housed at the University of California — Berkeley. He will speak at 7 p.m. tonight in the same location.

Tharp and his co-presenter, Dr. Stephanie Dalton, will work with the teachers to analyze research-based approaches to increase their students’ abilities. Tharp is the founding director for the center, which was established in 1996 through a grant from the U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Educational Research and Improvement.
