Retired Air Force colonel to speak at Memorial Day program

MILLEDGEVILLE — In honor of deceased veterans who have bravely given their lives to serve the nation, the Georgia Veterans Memorial Cemetery will hold its Memorial Day ceremony at 11 a.m.

The program will feature several highlights in tribute of the nation’s fallen heroes. The public is invited to take part in the annual observance.

“It’s a wonderful event to not only honor our service men and women but to also teach our children about the sacrifice so many have made for our country,” said Russell Feagin, director at Georgia Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Milledgeville.

Various area groups will contribute their time and talent to Monday’s ceremony. Keynote speaker will be retired United States Air Force Col. Gerald Johnson, a Milledgeville native. Local resident Brianna Wilson will sing the national anthem and “America the Beautiful.”  Members of the Patriot Guard Riders, the Knights of Columbus of Putnam and Baldwin counties, and the Georgia National Guard Honor Detail will also be in attendance.

“It’s good to see how the whole community came together to show tribute to our deceased veterans,” said Feagin.

Concluding the ceremony will be a presentation of taps performed by Michael Feagin and Luisa Bufford.

“Taps is usually sounded during flag and memorial ceremonies,” Feagin said. “It just wouldn’t be a true Memorial Day tribute without hearing those trumpets play.”

As part of the Memorial Day program, a special ceremony honoring the veterans from Georgia who have died from combat injuries since last Memorial Day will also take place.

“We have two men who were killed in action in 1950 during the Korean War who are among those that will be honored during our special ceremony,” Feagin said.

According to Feagin, the bodies of the two men were recently recovered and identified. One is buried in the Georgia Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Milledgeville and the other is buried in his hometown of Griffin.
