Collins announces run for U.S. Congress

MILLEDGEVILLE — Jackson native Mike Collins learned hard working, conservative values from his father, former U.S. Congressman Mac Collins who served in the House of Representatives for 12 years.

“Whenever he works something, he does it 110 percent. The hard work aspect is something I’ve always taken from him,” Collins said.

Collins is seeking the Republican nomination for the 10th Congressional District seat open after Congressman Paul Broun announced in February his plans to seek the U.S. Senate in 2014.

The 46-year-old Jackson resident has been the model of the American success story and hopes taking that entrepreneurial spirit to Washington, D.C. can straighten out government that is “out-of-control.”

Today, Collins Industries/Collins Trucking employs more than 82 people and operates 80 trucks and flatbed trailers throughout the southeast and midwestern states.

The Republican hopeful carries a free market mindset believing in letting the worker and entrepreneur go. Collins said constant government regulations “take away that spirit of wanting to achieve.”

“The red tape and bureaucracy are strangling business. I’ll put my 20 years of business and managerial experience to work for the people of central Georgia. If I tried to start my business today, I’m not sure I could,” Collins said. “The politicians and bureaucrats have made it impossible. I’m afraid for my kids and our country. We need to return to an America where entrepreneurs can start a business and working people can keep more of what they earn.”

Above all, Collins said the job at the federal level is to get out of the local folks way. Putting areas such as transportation and education back to the local level is important for better success, according to the Republican.

Collins’ brother is taking over the business so the 46-year-old can pursue liberty, freedoms and jobs on the campaign trail and potentially in Washington, D.C.

Consistent principles guide Collins, he said.

“People elect you on that. It’s the people that take an office and change to keep their office. That’s the people you need to be leery of,” he said.

Collins is a graduate of Georgia State University. He is married to his high school sweetheart, Leigh Ann, and they are the proud parents of three children. They attend Rocksprings Church in Jackson.

“I’m not looking for a career. I do see a need and think that we are all called to serve this nation in some capacity,” Collins said. “I honestly believe this is what I was called to do to serve the people in the 10th District.”
