Ride for Richard to raise funds for Putnam County deputy

EATONTON — Eatonton and Putnam County firefighters and law enforcement have organized a “Ride for Richard” area fundraising event for Putnam County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Richard Herren.

Herren, who is suffering from cancer, has accumulated a number of medical bills after undergoing a series of surgeries and treatment sessions.

Hosted by the Red Knights Motorcycle Club Chapter 13, the ride will leave Eagle One Travel Center/Eatonton Travel Plaza on U.S. Highway 441 at 9 a.m. Saturday and will travel approximately 130 miles to Benton Lee’s Steakhouse for lunch in Uvalda.

“It’s a donations only style ride with all proceeds going to assist Richard with his medical bills,” said event organizer and Eatonton assistant fire chief Eugene Hubert.

Everyone is invited to join the effort to give back to a man who has given so much to the community in his many years of service.

“The idea started back in April when Richard was going through surgery,” said Hubert. “He’s such a wonderful person, and insurance only covers so much of the expenses. We wanted a way to help a man who has dedicated 44 years of his life to helping the public.”

Herren served his country in the United States Marine Corps for four years, worked as a Georgia game warden for four years, and has worked for Putnam County Sheriff’s Office for 36 years. At 66, Herren is described by those in the community who know him as dependable and helpful.

“In his 36 years as a deputy he’s missed less days on the job than a man half his age,” said Hubert.

Georgia State Patrol troopers in area counties are donating their time to assist with the ride. Troopers will lead the ride through each county to ensure safety for all participants.

“It means a lot that the state patrol is leading us through this ride and their time is greatly appreciated,” said Hubert.
