Georgia College presents ‘Seminar’ - A thoughtful comedy

William Warren, a senior in the Georgia College Department of Theatre, will direct “Seminar,” a thought-provoking comedy about four writing students and their sadistic professor.

The play will be presented in the Campus Black Box Theatre Nov. 19-23 and is recommended for mature audiences.

It is rare for a student to direct a main-stage production such as “Seminar,” but Warren earned the honor for his senior capstone project.

“He has demonstrated a great deal of talent during his four years at Georgia College, and we felt confident that he was ready for this challenge,” said Dr. Karen Berman, chair of the theatre department.

“Seminar,” written by Theresa Rebeck, played on Broadway in 2011. It examines a group of creative writing students who want to become novelists, but find themselves in a seminar led by an arrogant and abusive professor.

Warren said he could relate to what the characters experience.

“For a very long time, I wanted to be a writer,” he said. “I connect to it on a personal level.”

He believes many students also will be able to relate to the comic elements of dealing with a difficult professor.

“It’s a thoughtful comedy,” he said. “I want people to laugh. I also want people to reevaluate what a comedy is.”

During auditions, Warren chose a young cast - two freshman, two sophomores and one junior. The cast members are Will Morris, Codi Henson, Christine DeCarlo, Trey Rutherford and Eric Burleson.

Warren said the experience of directing a main-stage production has been exhilarating.

“The biggest challenge has been organizing a budget – the money for the set and costumes,” he said. “The easiest part is hanging out with the actors. I love people.”

“Seminar” will run from Nov. 19-23 at 8 p.m.

Tickets can be purchased at Tickets are $5 for students, $10 for faculty, staff and non-GC students and $14 for general admission. Tickets are also available at the box office.
