Walmart bomb threat ends safely

MILLEDGEVILLE —

At 2:50 p.m. Tuesday a man placed a 911 call threatening to blow up Walmart, according to the law enforcement. No one was injured in what turned out to be an employee's bad judgment.

“Sometimes it's because people don't want to be at work,” Maj. John Davis of the Milledgeville Police Department said. “Then they'll found out on the back end how serious this is.”

The suspect, Shavis Hicks, was quickly apprehended by MPD and gave a full confession within two hours of the incident. Davis said he was at Walmart during the time of the call.

MPD located Hicks standing outside with a group of employees.

He is charged with a felony count of false public alarm. The suspect was booked at the Baldwin County Jail Tuesday evening.

Hicks used a cell phone to call the bomb threat into the Baldwin County 911 Center. Employees and customers were evacuated from the immediate shopping center area, while all entry points were blocked off by local agencies.

The Baldwin County Sheriff's Office, Georgia State Patrol, Georgia College Public Safety, EMS and fire department responded quickly supporting MPD.

“We are thankful for all local law enforcement, the fire department and EMS that came out to help us. Everything was really smooth with Walmart personnel. Clearing that building out was simple to do with all of their help,” Davis said.

The BCSO's mapping software helped MPD pinpoint Hicks' location.

Davis said the police had previous contact with Hicks and knew where to find him once they got the cell number.

Luckily, this threat turned out to be harmless, but the extensive response showed preparedness.

“Of course when we get these type of things we take them seriously because you never know when it could be a real incident,” Davis said.
