BCSO: abduction allegations false

MILLEDGEVILLE — An investigation into an attempted child abduction uncovered false allegations, according to sheriff's office officials.

Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office 911 dispatch responded to a call last Thursday of an attempted abduction and an assault of a 14-year-old girl along Harrisburg Road.

According to an incident report, a black male driving a small dark blue pick-up truck approached two juveniles while they were riding their bicycles in the neighborhood.

The man tried to convince the children to come with him by offering to give them whatever they wanted, the report said.

The 14-year-old who was with the young boys intervened and was physically assaulted by the man.

Upon investigating, Lt. Bobby Langford of the sheriff’s office brought the teen and her mother in for questioning.

According to Capt. Brad King, investigators found inconsistencies in the girl's account of events.

"She initially stated that when she saw the man trying to get the kids in the truck she convinced them to run away and then she went up to him and an altercation ensued, but when interviewed she said the kids were there to witness the assault," King said.

The victim claimed the man got out of the truck and physically assaulted her, but King said the injuries she had were not consistent with an injury caused by a grown man.

After further questioning, the teen recanted her statement and admitted that the allegations were untrue.

King says no charges will be filed against the juvenile.

"We don't really know what her motivation was for making it up, but anytime we get an allegation of any type, we're going to make sure a thorough investigation is conducted," he said.
