First STEM Forensic Summer Academy at CSH

MILLEDGEVILLE — On Monday, Milledgeville became home to the first ever STEM Forensic Summer Academy being held at the newly refurbished Wilkes Building on the Central State Hospital Campus.

This academy is the vision and hard work of the teams of Committee for Action Program Services - Analytical Training Laboratories, LLC (CAPS-ATL) and the newly formed Georgia based non-profit STEMversity.

Darrell Davis, former Laboratory Director of the Federal Drug Enforcement Administration, launched CAPS - ATL, LLC and the newly formed STEMversity organization with the assistance of professionals from across the United States. He wants Milledgeville to become a science, technology, engineering and mathematics hub.

The STEM Forensic Summer Academy will take place during June 2-13 (for high school students), and June 16-27 (for middle schools students). The academy will include students from the local school districts to include Georgia College Early College, Baldwin, Putman, and Georgia Military Academy.

Students will conduct forensic analysis and learn how to operate analytical instrumentation in the 10,000 square foot Wilkes Building.

Davis says the academy's focus is to give underrepresented students an opportunity to experience the analysis of forensic samples and to utilize and operate instrumentation used in a real-life forensic laboratory.
