Support needed

Cafe Central in need of donations

MILLEDGEVILLE — Cafe Central volunteers hope to raise enough funds to feed a Thanksgiving meal to more than 1,000 individuals next week, but without community donations it may not happen.

“We have no money for Thanksgiving. We’re hoping to feed 1,500 people this year, but I’ll bet 2,000 will show up,” said Ann Bowen, director of Cafe Central. “We really need $3,000 for Thanksgiving.”

The Milledgeville soup kitchen has already received a donation of 60 turkeys, but volunteers hope to collect more monetary donations.

“It’s much easier for us to buy what we need,” Bowen said.

The Thanksgiving meal will be served from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 19 at Freedom Church, located at 500 Underwood Road.

“We’re giving a bag of groceries to everybody that comes in. This year we’re able to do this because of the work Georgia Military College and Georgia College did for us collecting canned goods,” Bowen said. “We have been blessed beyond belief.”

The holiday meal will consist of turkey, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce, rolls, fresh turnips and collards, and homemade dressing and giblet gravy.

“We also really need some volunteers, and it’s just crazy we haven’t heard from anybody with money, but I’m not worried about it. I know this will be taken care of. People will come through and just handle the problem and do what they’ve always done, which is love their brothers and sisters,” Bowen said. “If we don’t have enough food, it’s OK because we will still be together. It’s going to be great.”

As a way to help raise funds for Cafe Central, LongHorn Steakhouse is hosting a pancake breakfast from 8:30 to 9:15 a.m. Saturday. Tickets are $8 and the meal will include pancakes and bacon, coffee, water, orange juice or tea.

Cafe Central offered its first Thanksgiving meal in 2010, feeding 300 people. The soup kitchen was able to feed 1,400 people during its Thanksgiving meal in 2011 through donations.
