Simpson visits Kiwanis Club

MILLEDGEVILLE — The Kiwanis Club of Milledgeville had a special guest Tuesday.

Milledgeville native Stephen Simpson, who seeks the Republican nomination for Georgia’s U.S. House of Representatives in the open 10th Congressional District, wants to change the culture on Capitol Hill.

“There is a lot of anger in the United States because it seems that we’ve sent men and women to Washington to do the people’s business and all we get is people fighting amongst themselves in each party,” he said. “People want their politicians to be steadfast in their convictions but moderate in their temperament.”

Simpson said leadership “isn’t a popularity contest.”

He identifies the $17 trillion national debt as the No. 1 threat to the country.

“I’ve got the experience as a small businessman, a banker and a military officer managing multi-million dollar budgets that you can’t spend more than you take in,” Simpson said.

Military readiness and supporting Georgia’s billion-dollar agriculture industry are vital platform issues.

“When we support the farmer, we support jobs. We don’t talk about that much anymore, and we are about to run out of a farm bill. The administration is doing nothing. We owe it to the farmers,” Simpson said.

Simpson attended high school at Georgia Military College and continued to Georgia College, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in management before receiving an MBA in finance from Mercer University.

A life member of the Association of the United States Army, Air Force Association and the Military Officers’ Association, he served in the United States Army for 20 years, before retiring as a lieutenant colonel. His final six years were at the Pentagon.

Simpson was an intelligence officer with the Defense Intelligence Agency and later served the Secretary of the Army in the Office of Congressional Liaison.
