Helping Hands hosts annual fundraiser

MILLEDGEVILLE — The Helping Hands Society will hold its annual dinner fundraising event Saturday at the Milledgeville Country Club. The event is slated to start at 6 p.m.

“We have the fundraiser every year to help raise funds to help the poor and needy in Baldwin County,” said Mike McCabe.

Helping Hands includes McCabe and other parishioners of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church who strive to help struggling families in the county, regardless of their religious affiliation. The group helps provide food, shelter, medicines and utility assistance to Baldwin County residents.

According to McCabe, the fundraiser is necessary because there is such a high demand for help in the present economy.

“The need is greater than our resources. Most of our funding comes from the annual fundraiser and donations throughout the year from parishioners. Last year we had over 120 people attend and collected over $10,000 in funds,” he said.

Helping Hands also receives a limited grant from FEMA to help out in their cause. Members also put together Thanksgiving and Christmas baskets each year for the residents of Milledgeville.

In 2012, the Helping Hands Society took major steps in helping local residents in need.

The society was able to assist 243 families, and $50,000 was raised to pay for food vouchers, rent, mortgages, lodging, medicine, utilities and holiday food baskets. They look to improve on these numbers this year.

Persons with financial needs are given an appointment to meet with an interview team. Their needs are assessed to determine what help is needed and what can be provided.

“We do what we can and every little bit counts. We’ve been helping families in need for a little over a decade,” said McCabe.

The fundraiser will include a Buffet dinner, a live and silent auction, and door prizes. Tickets are $30 and must be purchased in advanced. For more information on the fundraiser, call 478-452-2421.
