Local nonprofits raise thousands of dollars on Georgia Gives Day

MILLEDGEVILLE — When the statewide flash mob day of giving kicked off Dec. 6, representatives of local organizations never imagined they would raise thousands of dollars in a mere 24-hour period on Georgia Gives Day.

"We raised $1,990 in 21 donations plus $1,000 from a generous grant through the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation. It was not just successful for us, but for many in the state,” said Sandy Baxter, executive director of Communities In Schools of Milledgeville-Baldwin County (CISMBC). “We were very pleased with the outpouring from the community."

Georgians had the opportunity to give back and help local communities by participating on Georgia Gives Day, initiated by the Georgia Center for Nonprofits as a way to bring the state together as one community and raise funds and awareness for Georgia nonprofits.

Participating organizations from the Milledgeville area included the Animal Rescue Foundation (ARF) of Baldwin County, CISMBC, Compassionate Care Clinic, Georgia College & State University Foundation, Georgia Military College Foundation, Habitat for Humanity of Milledgeville-Baldwin County, Lockerly Arboretum Foundation and Oconee River Greenway Foundation.

“We had 47 donors on Dec. 6. We ended up winning $1,000 prize donation from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, as did the Georgia College & State University Foundation. The amount we raised from online donations was $1,120, so in total we raised a record of $4,620,” said Colin Moore, incoming president of Oconee River Greenway Foundation. “Proceeds will go toward trail construction and future phases of the Greenway. It was a great grassroots donation drive and we look forward to participating next year too.”

Through the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, the Community Foundation of Central Georgia awarded additional prizes of $2,500 to CISMBC, ARF and Oconee River Greenway Foundation among others.

“We did really well; in just that one day, we raised $1,185 in donations with a total of 31 donors. We also won $500 in a drawing from the Community Foundation of Central Georgia. We had donations before and after Dec. 6, where we raised $2,005, so in total we had just over $4,800,” said Bobbie Thompson of ARF. “If it wasn’t for the donors, we wouldn’t have done well or received awards from the Community Foundation of Central Georgia.”
