Local business provides turkeys to needy families

MILLEDGEVILLE — Many needy families in Baldwin County will have a turkey on their table Thursday thanks to Slater's Funeral Home. Monday, several families selected by the Division of Family and Children Services (DFACS) walked into Johnny McDade's Grocery and received a free turkey, thanks to former Mayor Floyd Griffin and his sister, Delbra Griffin.

Slater's Funeral Home provided the frozen turkeys at no cost to the recipients. The gesture of gratitude was inspired by the many blessings Griffin and his sister have in their own lives.

“We've been so blessed and we wanted to give to those who are in need of a blessing, especially during this time of the year,” said Griffin as he stood outside the entrance of McDade's Grocery. He greeted everyone who entered with a warm smile, kind words, and a friendly handshake.

A total of 40 turkeys were given out. The recipients were identified through DFACS and received a coupon to present to the store clerk in order to receive their turkey.

“We felt DFACS was more suited than we were to judge whether or not a family is in need of extra support,” Griffin said.

The families chosen to receive a frozen turkey shared a common characteristic. Most were unemployed as a result of a major closure or job loss in the Baldwin County area.

“We're doing this because we're trying to help people in need, especially those who have been laid off and are struggling to make ends meet,” Griffin said.

One recipient, Evelyn Duncan, was especially thankful for the turkey. Duncan has a household of four to provide for, but times are hard. The gift of a turkey will make it possible to put food on the table for her 27 grandchildren who will be in her home this Thanksgiving.
