MILLEDGEVILLE — In honor of Georgia's Arbor Day, Feb. 15, Lockerly Arboretum will have its annual Arbor Day Program Saturday Feb. 16 from 9 a.m. to noon.

"Every year we make sure the program coincides with Georgia's Arbor day to celebrate the beauty that comes from southern landscaping,"  said Lockerly Arboretum Executive Director Jim Garner.

Although National Arbor Day falls in April of every year, Georgia has always celebrated Arbor Day in the month of February. There's a specific reason for choosing this time of the year for the state's celebration.

"The best time to plant trees in Georgia is between the months of November and mid-March. Planting during this time allows trees a chance to become established before the hot, dry period of a Georgia summer," Garner said.

The program will feature a variety of activities and expert speakers are lined-up, ready to share their vast knowledge about the proper care of trees. The keynote speaker will be Dr. Kim Coder, professor at the University of Georgia. He will deliver an informative speech titled "Tree Biology: How Not to Kill Your Trees."

"Dr. Coder is a well known expert in the field of urban forestry and we feel privileged and honored to have him speak at our program," Garner said.

Lockerly staff will also provide care and instructions on the care of trees. Garner, along with Bradley Roberts, Lockerly director of horticulture, will have a live demonstration of how to properly plant a tree.

Admission to the arboretum is free of charge and open to the public, however, a $10 registration fee is required to attend the Arbor Day Program.

"Seating is limited and the event has been well attended in the past so the best thing to do is register for your spot as soon as possible," said Garner.

The Arboretum displays and maintains numerous plant collections year round. The grounds are open Monday through Friday 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Saturdays 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Visitors are welcome to tour the gardens at their own pace.

To register for the Arbor Day Program, or schedule a private group or educational tour, call (478) 452-2112 or email Vicki Folendore at vickifolendore@lockerly.org.
