Christmas holiday traffic ushers in accidents and fatalities

MILLEDGEVILLE —

The 102-hour Christmas holiday travel period began Friday, and the holiday accident and fatality count statewide is already significantly higher than 2011.

Thus far, the Georgia State Patrol office has reported 10 fatalities statewide for the 2012 holiday period, as of press time Christmas Eve. Three of the deaths are traffic-related fatalities that are being investigated by police in Smyrna, College Park and Newnan, according to a press release issued by the GSP.

According to the GSP, 309 crashes and 126 injuries have been reported as well.

GSP Post 33 in Milledgeville and local law enforcement agencies have not investigated any fatalities. One fatality in Grovetown has been reported for Troop E, which includes Milledgeville, Monroe, Grovetown, Washington and Madison.

Last year during the Christmas holiday period, the GSP investigated 289 traffic crashes that resulted in 182 injuries and a fatality. Troopers arrested 139 people for driving under the influence during the 78 hours of the holiday period last year. During the New Year's holiday period, troopers investigated 296 traffic crashes in Georgia that resulted in 172 injuries and seven traffic deaths.
