Milledgeville Junior Board recruiting 2013-2014 members

MILLEDGEVILLE — The Milledgeville Chapter of the Watson-Brown Foundation Junior Board of Trustees is seeking high school students to help preserve Middle Georgia history.

The junior board is recruiting students from its coverage area — Baldwin, Bibb, Hancock, Jasper, Jones, Monroe, Morgan, Putnam, Twiggs, Washington and Wilkinson — to serve on the board during the 2013-2014 academic year.

“We encourage students to apply who are eager to learn about preserving history,” said Matt Davis, director of the Old Governor’s Mansion at Georgia College and coordinator of the Junior Board project. “Along with receiving the opportunity to learn about the tenets of historic preservation, students also gain experience in leadership and philanthropy.”

The Milledgeville Chapter was established in October 2006 through a grant from the Watson-Brown Foundation that provides funds for preservation projects selected and approved by the board.

The junior board is made up of high school students who have a passion for historic preservation, are active community members, have good academic standing and have strong references from teachers.

Davis recruits talented sophomores, juniors and seniors with the help of Middle Georgia social studies teachers. The junior board accepts 14 students into the program.

“Our new board members will develop an appreciation for giving and working to improve their communities,” said Davis.

Junior board members awarded $33,000 in grants to fund preservation projects in Milledgeville and surrounding communities during the past year’s grant cycle.

Applications for board membership are due Friday, Sept. 20. Visit gcsu.edu/mansion/juniorboard.htm to apply online.

For more information about this program, call Matt Davis at 478-445-4545.
