The state fire commission is investigating the cause of a fatal Hancock County house fire.

According to a press release issued Monday afternoon by Georgia Insurance and Safety Fire Commissioner Ralph Hudgens, fire investigators are looking into the cause of the blaze that left one person dead over the weekend.

The blaze broke out sometime Sunday night at a home located at 1950 Log Cabin Road in Sparta. The fire resulted in a total loss to the two-story structure, according to the release.

Investigators have not determined the exact cause of the fire and the body of the deceased has been sent to the GBI Crime Lab in Atlanta for an autopsy, Commissioner Hudgens said. The gender of the body is unknown due to the condition of the remains and is still under investigation, according to Sheriff Tomyln Terrell Primus of the Hancock County Sheriff’s Office.

The Hancock County Sheriff’s Office is assisting with the investigation.
