Georgia Power issues scam warning

Georgia Power officials are warning customers to beware of scam artists impersonating company employees by phone.

In a press release issued Monday, Georgia Power officials said customers should never provide personal information to an unverified person.

“Scam artists have been known to call a customers, claim that the customer’s account is past due and that his or her electricity will be disconnected if they do not provide payment immediately,” states the release. “In most cases, the customer is asked to purchase a pre-paid debit card and provide the card’s account number. Residential and commercial customers are being victimized in this scam. Criminals, operating in Georgia and other parts of the southeast, frequently target senior citizens or those speaking English as a second language.”

The release also states that Georgia Power does not send employees to the home to collect payment.

“If an employee needs to visit a customer’s home for a service-related issue, he or she will be in uniform and present a badge with a photo, name and the company’s name and logo. The employee will also be in a vehicle marked with the company’s logo.”

Customers with questions or concerns about any phone calls they have received should call the company’s 24-hour customer service line at 1-888-660-5890.

Customers can also visit to send an email directly to Customer Service or visit a local Georgia Power business office.
