Layton Field renovations coming

MILLEDGEVILLE —

The City of Milledgeville recently released proposed Layton Field renovations including a small, off-leash dog park.

Ongoing City Council discussions about the current underutilization of Central City Park's ball field centered on nearby residents using the area as a dog play zone. Enforcement proved difficult and people didn't always clean up after pets.

Grant money and matching city funds are allocated to create a larger scale dog park at the Oconee River Greenway, as part of Phase 2 construction plans. City Manager Barry Jarrett said the Layton Field renovation will accommodate pet owners accustomed to using the park area.

The plans have a 250-foot slow pitch and 200-foot little league fence placed at Layton field.

Staff is working on the proposal now. Jarrett said the city is still in the planning stage, so no concrete costs are available.

Additional plans for a skate spot on the concrete slab near the field area are on the table, but Jarrett said the dog park is the one project on schedule.
