From staff reports
Milledgeville’s newly hired city planner, Michael Couch, has teamed up with Georgia College, and has plans to present a Central State Hospital reuse plan to Gov. Nathan Deal next week.
The proposal, which allows room for creativity and thinking outside of the box, is meant to spark a change that will create a new beginning on the south side of Baldwin County and hopefully, eventually, bring the area back to its once-known luster and glory. To actualize the plans, the City of Milledgeville would have to establish a Central State Hospital Local Redevelopment Authority and gain support for services from the State until the CSH LRA has the ability to become self-funded through sales of leases.
Couch is already in the process of getting everyone on board with the project, he said, and has already received a nod of approval from state Rep. Rusty Kidd, state Sen. Johnny Grant and even Congressman John Barrow, who is already working on ways to make the project viable through federal funding.
