MILLEDGEVILLE — The holiday season is in full swing as shoppers continue purchasing their last-minute Christmas gifts and shipping care packages around the world during the mailing Peak Week.

U.S. Postal Service (USPS), The UPS Store and FedEx employees urge last-minute shippers to send their packages to friends and families sooner than later.

“[Monday] was historically the busiest day of the year for the U.S. Post Office as far as mailing goes in order to meet the Christmas deadline,” said Chris Mitrisin, postmaster. “Packages are coming in left and right; just nonstop. We send around 2,000 to 3,000 packages a day. We anticipate keeping busy until Christmas Eve.”

Located in downtown Milledgeville, the post office is open during normal hours this season, from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Monday through Friday, and from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday. The local post office will be open Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve with shortened lobby hours, and close on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day in observance of the holidays.

“Customers need to make sure they have their packages ready with name and address,” Mitrisin said. “We’ve had customers wrapping their packages while waiting in line.”

The Milledgeville UPS Store looks forward to having a similar Peak Week compared to last year.

“We sent out about 80 to 100 packages per day the week before Christmas last year. We’re looking forward to the same number this year, if not more,” said Andy Patel, owner of the local business. “With online sales increased on Cyber Monday, I anticipate shipping to increase as well.”

Sending packages via UPS ground shipping this week is not guaranteed to arrive by Christmas Day.

UPS expected to pick up more than 34 million packages Monday, and anticipates delivering 29 million packages globally today.

Located in the Kmart shopping center, The UPS Store’s holiday hours are from 8:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday, and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.

As an authorized FedEx shipping center, the Ship Or Sell store is offering customers another avenue for mailing their letters and packages to domestic and international locations. Tuesday is the deadline for packages to be delivered at their destination by Christmas Day using ground and home delivery services.

Located at 130 Log Cabin Road near Kroger, Ship Or Sell is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. OfficeMax is also a local contracted station for FedEx drop-offs.
