Troopers collecting Toys for Tots

MILLEDGEVILLE —

The Georgia State Patrol and the United States Marine Corps are helping Toys for Tots Foundation in an effort to collect new, unwrapped toys for underprivileged children.

Troopers with Milledgeville’s Post 33 will collect toys at Walmart on North Columbia Street from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday.

Cpl. Ed Starling with the local trooper Post 33 said all items will be dispersed to Milledgeville and Baldwin County area kids.

“We are always looking at ways to better serve the community. This is a way to reach out to these families to make sure that everybody has a good holiday season,” Starling said.

Additionally, troopers are conducting a child safety seat check Saturday.

Each trooper is certified as a child safety seat technician.

“The public is invited to have the installation of the child safety seat checked by the troopers at that time,” Starling said. “This is a public service provided at no cost to the public.”

Children must be present to ensure that the seat is properly matched to their height and weight.

Starling said troopers find improperly installed child seats frequently.

“Just a quick informational session with the parent can show the parent how to properly install it to make the child safer while he or she is riding,” the trooper said.

Saturday’s Toys for Tots and safety check event will provide a welcoming atmosphere.

The GSP aren’t just about enforcement.

“The state patrol are here as a public service,” Starling said. “Our ultimate goal is safety of motorists and everyone on the road.”
