BOE approves revised Internet Safety policy

MILLEDGEVILLE — After sitting on the table for 30 days, the Baldwin County Board of Education approved an Internet Safety policy during Tuesday’s regular meeting after revisions included educating students about cybersafety.

According to the school system’s policy, the Internet Safety policy is put in place to prevent user access to inappropriate material via Internet and e-mail over the school system’s computer network, prevent unauthorized online disclosure of personal identification information of minors, and stop other unsuitable online computer network usage. The school system provides limited access to the Internet using a content filter through Lightspeed Systems on its 2,000 computers.

The revised Internet Safety policy now includes the education aspect under the responsibility of school staff as they continue to supervise and monitor usage. Baldwin County schools will educate minors about appropriate online behavior, including interacting with other individuals on social networking websites and in chat rooms, cyberbullying awareness and response as required by the Children’s Internet Protection Act.

The local school board formally adopted the Internet Safety policy in July 2002.

In other business, the board:

• heard a presentation from Blandy Hills Elementary School PTSO President Dr. Jeremy Dockery on the school’s student and stakeholder engagement;

• Anderson Bentley with LSW & Legal Shield discussed the county providing additional time for annuity providers to educate teachers on savings and retirement plans;

• approved minutes for the meetings held on Sept. 10, 11 and 17;

• approved personnel recommendations;

• approved financial reports for the school district and the Early Learning Center (ELC);

• approved to table for 30 days the updates to the ELC Travel Reimbursement Policy to correspond with the State Travel Policy updates;

• approved a purchase from Georgia Department of Education for Virtual School virtual classes for 23 high school students in the amount of $11,500 which comes from the general fund;

• approved field trip recommendations from Baldwin High School and Midway Elementary School; and

The school board is scheduled to next meet at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 13 at the board office.
