Council appoints Fuller as CSH redevelopment chair

MILLEDGEVILLE — The Milledgeville City Council voted to appoint local real estate agent Quay Hurt Fuller as chair of the Central State Hospital Redevelopment Authority Tuesday evening.

Council unanimously made the appointment to the newly formed body after establishing the committee last month. Dudley Rowe, Russ Walden, Bruce Vaughn, Dr. John Ferguson, Dr. Nolan Stephens, Dr. Stanley (Stas) Preczewski, Dr. George Martinez and Fuller were all named to the authority in June. Council member Jeanette Walden said she is proud the city is moving forward with support of a project that seeks to redevelop the campus of Central State Hospital into a regional health care center.

The Council also voted to authorize the Milledgeville Police Department to operate its own enhanced emergency 911 system. Currentlly, all calls are routed to the county 911 center. Calls from residents within the city limits are transferred to the Police Department.

The 911 system would send fees collected for land telephone lines within the city and cell phones registered within city limits to the city rather than the county.

The City Council also voted to adjust city manager Barry Jarrett’s salary based on a review built into his contract for professional services. Council unanimously voted to increase his salary by $7,500.

In a work session following the meeting, Council discussed the addition of an ATM style merchant terminal to be located in the lobby of the Milledgeville Police Department that would allow people to pay fines and post bond with debit or credit cards. Currently the MPD does not accept debit or credit cards. They system, interim Police Chief Dray Swicord said, also interfaces with the city’s court system reconciling fines paid with open cases.

The Council also learned that the city of Milledgeville has been awarded $42,000 from the United States Department of Agriculture for use in constructing a pavilion for the Downtown Farmer’s Market held on E. Hancock Street each Tuesday.

Jarrett informed Council that the city has responded to an offer from Baldwin County to resolve the standoff concerning unpaid SPLOST collections to the city from the county.

Council member Phillip Joiner updated council on the success of the Independence Day fireworks display at the Milledgeville Mall June 30.

The Milledgeville City Council meets the second and fourth Tuesdays at 6:30 p.m. in Council chambers at Milledgeville City Hall.
